Introducing Ben Barreth, Community Builder & Software Developer at GWB
Please extend a warm welcome to Ben Barreth as the new community builder and full-time software developer at Geeks With Blogs. We've been wanting to add some cool features to the site but haven't had the opportunity until now. Adding Ben to the team should give us a big kick in the right direction. Ben has several years of .Net development experience and is heavily involved in the startup community in Kansas City, including the KC Startup Village as well as his own startup initiatives: Homes for ......

Can't leave town for 2 days....
without the spammers coming out of the woodwork...  Do you think they monitor my house?  Who knows.  Sorry for all the spam this weekend.  I have removed the posts and placed some more filter help to stop them.  I will be monitoring the site closer now that I have a connection again.  SubText will definitely help us against this when we launch.

Geekswithblogs.net 2.0 Initial Roadmap
Well after 3 years of .Text it is time to move on. For the next version of Geekswithblogs.net we will be implementing a spinoff of .Text named SubText. Our team is currently working on a smooth import process as well as adding the features of .Text that we added to make SubText a very smooth transition. This move will change some of the blog skins by adding new ones and we hope to support some of the older ones as well. This move is still under development, but we see it completing within the next ......

Administration Update - New Version of FreeTextBox
I just wanted to let everyone know I updated the FreeTextBox version on Geekswithblogs.net to hopefully get a cleaner interface to adding information to your blog. I have been using Live Writer or w.Bloggar for so long I forgot how hard it was to use the textbox offered in administration. If you notice any issues with this version, ping support@geekswithblogs.com with your problem and screenshot if you can. Technorati tags: Geekwithblogs, FreeTextBox, .Text ......

Tired of Contact Page SPAM - CAPTCHA has been added
I don't know about you guys, but over the past couple months, I have been getting a lot of SPAM via the Contact page on my blog. I knew this would happen since it would be extremely easy to scrap the site and find this page on every blog with a simple form to fill out. Since this has been a huge problem, we added CAPTCHA to this form. Just like adding a comment, this process makes it very difficult to automate auto filling and submitting. This will not stop spammers who are willing to fill out the ......

First Few Days on the New Servers
I need to start publishing site related news on this blog again as that is the exact reason I started this blog. The honeymoon period is over with the new hosted servers and it is time to start fighting a few small fires that keep popping up with IIS and the site. With the new horsepower, it is hardly noticable when an error occurs, but they are still happening (we knew we wouldn't be able to throw servers at this problem). Hopefully I will find some solutions to the problems we are having this week ......

Web Hosting Deal for Geeks With Blogs
It has been awhile since I have discussed the deal we have with DiscountASP.net, so I thought I would bring it up again to new readers and bloggers. If you need a hosting account for personal web site or a business site, check out the deal we have with DiscountASP.net. You get 6 MONTHS FREE and no setup fee! That is an incredible deal. Geekswithblogs.net is hosted with them and I can say their support and uptime is the best I have seen around ......

Geeks With Blogs Reboot
You may have noticed that Entrepreneurswithblogs and Geekswithblogs were down for a short time last night. We had to do an update on the servers and figured it would be best to do them all at the same time. Everything should be up and running now, thanks for your patience. - Jeff Julian ......

Welcome our 800th Blogger! and 12,500th Post!
We have reached the 800th blogger marker and 12,500th post making us one of the largest, if not the largest blogger site (not owned by Microsoft) relating to Microsoft technologies. One thing I have heard over time from early members was a concern about getting to big and having the community voice no longer be the same. This has not been the results. We have changed a little over the past year, but we still get a steady voice of great content coming out everyday. Thanks to all the members that have ......

We were experiencing problems with the Main Feed for the past 24 hours, but everything seems to be fixed with a solution I have put in place. Thanks for your patience.

As many of you have seen, Microsoft and Mozilla have agreed to use a new icon to represent RSS feeds. If you want to use it in your posts, I have hosted it for us and it can be found at http://www.geekswithblogs.n... ......

Geekswithblogs Reposting Issue
One problem that I have seen on Geekswithblogs is the reposting of items in aggregators when something isn't actually reposted. Usually it is a bulk of posts and not single posts. It is something that I can not place an exact problem on. I have saved feeds and compared then to previous versions to see if WinDiff could find a change with no luck. The only other thing that could cause it would be HTTP compression and the way aggregators are uncompressing and comparing. Since I need to run more tests ......

How images in .Text really work
Sarah posted her frustrations about .Text images, so first off I want to point her at my post for how bloggers should you images on the site. So now that we know we are suggesting Flickr instead, what about images now, why won't they work. .Text inserts images into a directory based on domain. So if you uploaded your photos from www.geekswithblogs.net, it gets placed in a folder www_geekswithblogs.net and is accessible from only www.geekswithblogs.net. So geekswithblogs.com will go to geekswithblogs_com. ......

To Flickr or not To Flickr
While designing the outline for features of GWB 2.0, I realized that the Galleries piece is one of those that I am not sure ever did what we wanted. Because of this, I am going to create a image service provider for the system that will be configured for day one to work with Flickr. Flickr got it right and I have a feeling I won't if I created an image hosting service inside of GWB 2.0. This will cause some issues if you are currently using the Galleries inside GWB 2.0. As many of us have found, ......
